Suggest Treatment For Double Vision Due To Weakness Of Extraocular Muscles

Question: I woke up yesterday morning with double vision. I ended up going to the emergency room at our local hospital as we live in small town. They took all my vitals, urine test, CT Scan. Ultimately they referred me to my physician to schedule an MRI. I have tested my eyes in the last 24+ hours and it seems that is my right eye that is slightly off center towards my nose. If I move my head to the right but keep my eyes to the left I can see only one object but as I turn my head back the to left and keep my eyes forward or to the right I am seeing two objects, level but apart. I am female, 71, in good health overall, not on any medication, no fever, no headaches etc. Any information you can provide?

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. Your symptoms are suggesting weakness of extraocular muscles. These muscles are specialized to regulate movement of eye ball. If anyone of them gets weakened or paralyzed then you are unable to move eye in that direction & diplopia can occur. There are certain exercises that sometimes help to give strength. While in other cases surgical manipulation is required. I would suggest you to visit a tertiary care hospital & get an appointment for a "Consultant Ophthalmologist" ONLY. He is specialized in dealing with these conditions. He will examine the eye, perform tests like visual acquity, fundoscopy etc and then will correlate them. He will then discuss further management.
