Brief Answer:
Medications needed for excessive cough
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing to Health Care Magic.
If
dry cough is excessive, affecting the sleep or is associated with
vomiting after the cough, then treatment is needed.
If she has never had wheeze till now, if there is no sleep disturbance because of the cough and it is just the day time dry cough, you may try over the counter cough preparations that contain
Dextromethorphan like XXXXXXX Junior/ Chericof/ Zedex P for 3 to 5 days.
But if she has had wheeze in the past or the cough is associated with vomiting after the cough, then she will need medications like Bricanyl/
Levolin for 5 to 7 days after consultation with your
Pediatrician.
If the cough has been going on for some time, please visit your Pediatrician who can examine the chest and give medications accordingly.
If she has breathing difficulty or is breathing fast, then it is advisable to get her seen by your Pediatrician immediately.
Hope this answers your query.
Please do get back if you need further assistance.
Best wishes.
