Suggest Treatment For Dry Mouth
Question: I have had dry mouth syndrome for 7 months. My mouth is sore, tongue rough, roof of mouth itches, gums hurt and erroding, in morning when I wake up my mouth has white film between gums and cheek and I have to peel it off. When I brush and floss the film remains. The dentist has no answers and just suggested biotene rinse and specific mints. My PCP did some blood work looking for sjogrenes but the initial test was normal. I have been on same epilepsy meds for past 6 yrs. This problem started over night in the winter ; originally I just thought my lips were windburnt from walking outdoors. The symptoms continue with no relief.
Brief Answer:
Xerostomia.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. Anticonvulsants can lead to gum problems. Hence drug induced Xerostomia should be ruled out.
2. Artificial saliva (such as Aquet) and Tab. Rebagen (rebamipide) may help.
3. Other causes of Sicca Syndrome should be investigated. Diabetes insipidus should be ruled out. Mouth breathing or snoring will worsen symptoms.
4. Salivary gland nuclear scan can help check salivary function. MRI Sialography is also recommended.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
Regards.

Thank you for the information. One more question. Prior to the dry mouth syndrome I used a facial hair remover lotion and I used to like once in the mustache area and then I used it a second time within a three day period shortly after that is when I noticed the dry mouth syndrome could this be related.
Brief Answer:
The possibility of hair removal lotion causing this is remote.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. Though most hair removal lotions are not for use on the face, this is unlikely to cause such a severe internal reaction.
2. Even if we assume that the lotion caused a reaction, it should be self limiting.
3. I would add anti allergic and steroid to the supportive medication to tide over these symptoms till you recover.
