Suggest Treatment For Eczema Rashes On The Buttocks
Question: I underwent a colonoscopy with a general anesthetic in late December. Within 48 hours I broke out in raised red small pimple rashes on my arms, legs, thighs and buttocks (larger red rash). Two months later the red pimple dot rashes that were on my arms and thighs seem to have resolved after using a topical cream. However, I am still getting a recurring red rash spots on my the upper part of my buttocks which become itchy and seeps slightly when it arises. Other then that, it looks awful but is not painful in any way unless I touch it. When I look at pictures on the internet it concerns me it could be herpes - but there is no continuous itchiness or painful fluid blisters. The rashes also looks like eczema (which I have on my elbows) and fungal infections. My question is can a colonoscopy cause this reaction? I have never had any issue of rashes on my buttocks before.
Thank you

Hello. Thank you for writing to us
I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist).
I have gone through your query and i have noted your concern.
It is unlikely that colonoscopy was responsible for the rash. I request you to kindly upload a few images of the rash in the "Reports Section" so that i am able to guide you better regarding possible diagnosis and appropriate management.

Eczematous dermatitis
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thank you. I have viewed the Images.
This seems like an eczematous dermatitis.
If i was the treating doctor I would suggest you to use a potent topical steroid cream e.g clobetasol propionate 0.05% cream, twice daily.
In addition you may also take a tablet of cetrizine 10mg once daily for symptomatic relief from itching.

Thanks Dr K. As you can imagine I am very please that from the photos you don't think this is herpes. I didn't think it was.
Just 3 last questions please:
1. How long should I take the medications
2. Would the raised red dots (that were itchy and now resolved) on my arms, thighs etc be related to this condition?
3. If not the lubricants, medications used in the colonoscopy ., what could have caused this condition in your (broad) view?
Many thanks

Eczematous dermatitis
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
1. You may need to apply the suggested medications for 2-4 weeks.
2 &3. The rash on arms and thighs could have been a part of the same process i.e eczematous dermatitis. I presume underlying dry skin as the cause of this eczematous dermatitis with the rash on back worsening due to constant scratching.
Regards

Dear Dr K
I just uploaded 3 pictures of 2 new spots that have just appeared on the side of my left buttock. They are hard in form, do not itch and are not red. Do you think this is related to Eczematous dermatitis? Or from the topical cream I am know using? Just want to make sure again this is not likely to be herpes. Thanks and appreciate your comments.

Brief Answer:
Bacterial skin infection; should resolve with topical antibiotic
Detailed Answer:
Thank you. I have reviewed the Images.
This is certainly not herpes.
This seems like a folliculitis. Different from Eczematous dermatitis. I suggest you to use topical antibiotic cream for these e.g either fusidic acid 2% cream or mupirocin 2% cream,2x daily. Please don't use your eczema cream for these.
