Suggest Treatment For Elevated GGT And Ferritin Levels
Question: Hi, I'm a very healthy peri-menopausal woman, very low body weight, don't drink and exercise extensively (10 plus hours per week of high-intensity exercise - running, cycling). I have elevated GGT levels and high ferritin count (after years of low iron issues). How can I best lower my GGT levels without using medication that will likely adversely affect my life?
Brief Answer:
GGT- due to exercise
Detailed Answer:
Hi
I have read your query.
I think I should tell you that isolated rise of GGT in your tests means that the cause may not be liver disease.
You see, if it was a liver disease, other enzymes like AST and ALT would be high too (your report may mention SGOT/SGPT-same thing).
I look at the query again, and I see the cause of your elevated GGT- strenuous exercises.
So I dont think you need to be on medicines. Strenuous exercises can raise GGT.
Best of luck.

Hi Dr. Mittal,
Many thanks for your response. That's good to know, however, I was concerned that my ferritin levels were so high too (256 ug/L). For years I've had problems with low iron and have had several iron infusions, so this was a XXXXXXX in combination with the high GGT. My other liver enzymes did come back normal.
Thanks,
XXXXX

Brief Answer:
you need not worry
Detailed Answer:
Ferritin is also a mode of iron storage in the body.
The iron infusion would have been stored as ferritin,
I am assuming that the hemoglobin is normal.
So I will suggest you need not worry about that either.
Best of luck.
