Suggest Treatment For Elevated LDH5 Level And Low LDL Cholesterol

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Oct 2014
Question: Hello,
Every year I do comprehensive blood and urine tests. For 2 years now my LDH5 level has been elevated (reference 6-13%, mine is 18% in 2013 and 20% in 2014). All other liver enzymes (ALAT, ASAT, Albumine...) are within reference boundaries. Total LDH is also fine. I have very LDL cholesterol for which I am normally taking Crestor, but I stopped a month before the blood tests. I visited a gastro-enterologist and he said there is no need for follow-up, but as from what I read LDH5 is elevated in cases of liver damage and cancer so I am not quite sure I want to ignore this.

So my question is, whether elevated LDH5 level is a reason for a follow-up, and if yes, what kind?
Secondly, could it be related to my LDL cholesterol in any way?
Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Following causes to high LDH5 levels...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I understand your concerns.

It is true that LDH5 is an indicator for hepatic damages. However, as other enzymes levels are within the normal range, and echographic findings are normal too, then, I do not think there is something serious in here.

There are cases when this izoenzyme is raised due to physical activity prior to testing for example.

Crestor is a statin drug used to lower cholesterol levels. One of its side effects include damages to the heart and liver. However, they can also be associated with increased levels of other liver enzymes and CK, which is not happening in your case.

Can you please send your lab reports, so I can analyze them myself? I need to know how high your LDH5 was found?

Next, can you please specify if you have been using Crestor all the times you had your lab tests done? Or such changes were noted recently?

Looking forward to have your data in!

Thank you.

Note that I did not have an ultrasound (yet).

Regarding Crestor - I have stopped taking it 1 month before the blood test so I don't think it is related unless it can affect LDH levels that later on.

Brief Answer:
CK level to be measured...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back XXXXXXX

I have gone through your lab reports, and noted only high LDL-cholesterol and high levels of LDH5. I did not see any CK level, so, I advise to ask your doctor to run this test. It is to determine if you are experiencing any possible muscle damage that could explain high LDH5 levels.

Other cause to high LDH5 levels include:
- alcohol,
- Anesthetics
- Aspirin
- Clofibrate
- Fluorides
- Mithramycin
- Narcotics
- Procainamide

Looking forward to have your CK level in!
