Suggest Treatment For Elevated Liver Enzymes

default
Posted on Mon, 19 May 2014
Question: My last blood work showed an increase in my AST and Alt. My ALT is 128 and my AST is 70. This is sthe first time that these numbers have been this high. My doctor recommended taking N-Acetylcystine 600mg 2X a day and 150mg of milk thistle. Does this seem appropriate for elevated liver enzymes numbers. I've been reading about some serious side affects with NAC. I've also XXXXXXX taking Crestor for a few years which I have temporarily stopped taking.

Brief Answer:
NAC is the best liver protectant we have

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Thanks for coming to HealthCareMagic. My name is Vinay. Let me see if I can give you some basic information and help you understand why your doctor wants you to be on the NAC.

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is an amino-acid derivative (small protein) with over 40 years of scientific research to back it up. NAC’s powerful health benefits derive from its ability to restore intracellular levels of glutathione (GSH), which is the body’s most powerful antioxidant.

Glutathione is a very powerful antioxidant that helps the liver to protect you against chemicals which would damage the cell membranes of healthy cells. Amazingly enough, taking some medications like crestor and pain killers like Advil can release free radicals and need to be neutralized by glutathione. The headache you get from a hangover is due to such free radicals. Stress on your liver depletes glutathione and this is why supplementing with one of its precursors, NAC helps to protect against ongoing liver damage.

NAC neutralizes toxins and pollutants including heavy metals that accumulate in the liver, kidneys and fatty parts of the body.

Restoring glutathione levels with NAC supplements makes liver cells more able to protect themselves from ongoing damage caused by fatty accumulation, viral infections, drug induced damage, alcohol excess or autoimmune inflammation etc.

As to the side effects, the one you really have to worry about is its tendency to sensitize you to insulin. Which means that while you are on it, i would like you to check your blood sugars a bit more often. You might need to adjust your dose of Metformin downward while you are on it.

I can't really comment on the milk thistle that much since i've never really studied its molecular structure. But I know it is supposed to help the liver as well. i just don't know how much of it has been scientifically studied.

I hope this helps. Feel free to follow up
