Posted on Tue, 21 Oct 2014
Question: My son is 7 months old. A large portion of His right brain has encephalomalacia. He has seizures twice/thrice daily. Doctor has prescribed valparin 200 mg. Please advise. Left side of brain is fine.
He is one of the twins and on birth he suffered from RDS. Doctors told us that he had a small infarction in his brain but did not show any symptoms since 4 months of birth.

Brief Answer:
Anti epileptic medications need to be adjusted.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

Seizures are due to the encephalomalacia- which refers to brain damage on one side due to old infarction (lack of blood supply to brain). This would not lead to any other problem than seizures. In some cases, there may be weakness of one arm and leg.

The anti epileptic medications need to be adjusted. The dose of valparin can be increased upto 30-40 mg per kg body weight. If fits continue, additional medications such as oxcarbazepine or levetiracetam may be added.

I hope it helps.
