Suggest Treatment For Enlarged Prostate And COPD
My husband has severe Copd is 80 years old, no appetite. Malnourished in albumin and protein. He has reacted negatively to Ssris with hallucinations, etc also with Moa's and mood altering drugs in past. What can we give him to increase his appetite? He has an enlarged prostate. Is Periactin a consideration??
He is taking Trasadone for sleep and helps when he gets migraine headaches.
What do you suggest?
Periactin can help.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Loss of appetite is a common issue in elderly. Periactin can help in increasing his appetite. It can be used with the above mentioned drugs, is well tolerated and can cause a mild sedation and dryness of mouth. He needs to have adequate fluids with it.
As you age, you need fewer calories, but have higher nutritional needs. So his meals need to be more nutritionally dense. Have plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein and limit foods high in fats and sugars. Avoid all processed foods. Have smaller more frequent and more appealing foods. You can often add healthy extra calories in the form of olive oil, a little peanut butter or avocado. Do set a regular eating schedule and have social meals more frequently. Changing the mood and better interaction will also help in increasing the appetite.
I hope this answers your query.
