Suggest Treatment For Enlarged Prostate And Urine Incontinence
My uncle, 69 years old, is suffering from Sciatica which was diagnozed around 3 months ago when he had acute pain in left leg and also back ache. he also has enlarged prostate due to which there is incontinence in his urine routine. He has been getting physiotherepy sessions for almost a month now. Recently, he had severe stomach ache and was hospitalized for examinations, He was diagnozed with stomach ulcers. He is still in hospital going through the ulcers treatment. Stomach ache has improved a lot now. His back pain, though has aggrevated a bit. Doctors in hospital are askin our opinion for allowing them to give my uncle Epidural steroid injection. Since, it is a steroid injection, we are some sceptical about it. We are not sure what decision to take. Hence, we need a genuine opinion about it from healthcaremagic.com.
Should we allow for this injection or just carry on with physio therapy?
Also, what is the success rate of giving steroid injection for relief from back pain?
What side effects can we expect. Especially looking at his age.
Is steroid injection part of diagnosis or treatment.
Regards
I have attached the latest reports also.
Better for injection and physio. Minimal side effects
Detailed Answer:
Hi there.
Thanks for the query.
I have read the history and viewed the reports attached by you.
Since there is multiple level slip disc, best treatment at this stage would be Epidural steroid. It's an injection given near the nerve roots at the low back region consisting of local anaesthetic and steroid combination. This will give significant relief from his problem of low back pain for at least 6 months.
Repeat injection may be required after 6 months after continuous regular physiotherapy.
There are some precautions though. Steroid can aggravate stomach ulcers. So this could be a contraindication though it needs to be discussed with his Gastroenterologist first. The side effects of steroid won't be much because the steroid won't spread throughout the body much, since it lies mainly in the tissue layers around the nerve roots in the lower back. Diabetes if present needs to be controlled as well.
I hope I have answered your query.
I will be available to answer your follow up queries.
