Suggest Treatment For Erectile Dysfunction

I am 30 year old and married for 3 years. My husband is diabetic. He also has erectille dysfunction. We hardly have sex. Sometimes after 2-3 months. Many times it is unsuccessful. I think my husband is shy to share his problems with me. But I took initiative and told him that he needs to see a doctor. Initially he was trying to blame me for this. He used to say that I am too demanding and selfish. On my request he went to his usual diabetologist. Doc said that it is not because of his diabetic problem. It may be because of mental pressure and tension. I am very frustrated and feeling very helpless. I cannot share my problems with anybody. I want to have our baby and cannot do anything about me. My husband is not taking any initiative to solve this problem. I can understand his situation but he needs to see a doctor. We cannot just sit idle. But he never tries to understand my situation. what should I do? Please help me.

Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for your query.
I appreciate your efforts for medical consultation in so much distress.
You have asked your query in specialist forum and mentioned about mental tension/stress for erectile dysfunction problem, due to that I am replying it.
In treatment Erectile dysfunction (ED) first step is to identify cause of the problem. Erectile dysfunction can be a result of a psychological or physical problem.
Psychological causes: Most common cause in young patients. These include performance anxiety, emotional weakness, inferiority complex, stress, marital or relationship problems, low mood, feelings of guilt, and the effects of a past sexual and emotional trauma. Men with psychological problem usually have normal nocturnal erections and erections upon awakening, whereas men with physical problem often do not.
Physical causes: Include neurological disorders, alcoholism, smoking, hormonal imbalances, diabetes, hypertension, blood vessel disease and chronic diseases.
Structural problem: Deform penis and tight foreskin problem, which causes pain during sex.
Diabetes usually causes ED after several years of uncontrolled diabetes. In young population (like in your husband case) psychological causes are one of major cause of ED, which should be assessed and treated. Many time patients have multiple risk factors for developing ED and all risk factors should be managed during treatment process.
Following steps will help in your case:
-First of all, quit smoking and alcohol (if he is taking any)
-Good control of diabetes.
-Eat a healthy diet rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants like: fruits, milk and eggs
-Do not gain weight
-Exercise, particularly aerobic exercise (like: Jogging, skipping and cycling) for 30 minutes daily. It will increase blood flow all over body and will reduce stress.
-The commonly prescribed drug by the doctors for ED is sildenafil (Viagra) or Tadalafil (Megalis), which causes erections to be stronger and long lasting, but should be taken after prescription. It is important to rule out medical conditions specially related to cardiovascular system before starting such treatment. Both of these medicines have excellent result in physical causes of erectile dysfunction.
-There is also need to address inhibition for treatment, in your husband case. In such case identify one of your family member/friend to advice him for treatment. It is also better to meet nearby psychiatrist to address psychological causes of ED (mental pressure and tension), treatment related inhibitions and sex counseling.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you. In case of any doubt, I will be available for follow ups.
Wish you good health.
Regards,
