Question: My 72 yr old husband eats his food quickly and he has excessive belching. All day, even at night, during the night & will wake up belching. We are newly married so I don't know much about his former habits. He has said he learned as a child to eat quickly as a child.

Brief Answer:
certain foods, reflux, rate of eating, lactose intolerance

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Excessive belching can be related to :(1) his rate of eating. You mentioned that he eats quickly, this can cause or worsen reflux. Reflux can cause excess air

(2)reflux

(3) certain foods can worsen this problem- broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, carbonated drinks, prunes, beans, turnips, brussel sprouts, onion

He may need to reduce his use of one or more of these foods if they are part of his present diet

(4)lactose intolerance

In addition to slowing down his rate of food intake and reducing any foods that may be contributing to the problem, he may also want to consider the use of medications such as pepcid , zantac, prilosec or prevacid etc.
These medications reduce the acid production in the stomach and can reduce gas production even if there is no history of reflux.

They can take a few days to take an effect ( 5 to 7)

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
