Excessive flatulence may result from several natural factors
Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,
I am pleased to be able to assist you with your query. I understand it must be troubling to experience such an uncomfortable situation. Be rest assured that excessive flatulence on its own is not dangerous but could be as a consequence of other underlying factors. In as much as isolated episodes of flatulence without associated symptoms such as abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, constipation etc, it is also possible that it could be as a result of one of the several factors that could lead to that.
Naturally, you may be swallowing air while not chewing food slowly and thoroughly (swallowing large pieces of food causes you to swallow more air). Hot and fizzy drinks may increase the amount of carbon dioxide in your gut though this may likely cause more of belching.
Foods with high amounts carbohydrates such as cabbage, onions, apples, beans etc can also contribute to excessive flatulence.
Health conditions such as indigestion, coeliac disease (intolerance to gluten found in wheat, barley), irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance, bowel/intestinal infections (bacteria, fungal, and parasitic).
Certain medications such as statins, antifungal, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory etc. I noticed you are on simvastatin (a statin) which might also be responsible as excessive flatulence is a potential side effect.
Alcohol is one of the leading causes of many gut abnormalities including a potential cause of flatulence even though there is no real information supporting whether or not the quantity of alcohol might affect this condition or not.
In any case, I suggest you still present this problem to your physician so he can look at all potential factors and provide you with a proper decision. I cannot tell you for sure through this forum exactly the culprit of your excessive flatulence. But what I can advise you to do now is increase your intake of water 2-4 litres daily, light exercise (yoga if possible) will do you some general good, and abstain from alcohol for a couple of days to weeks so as to do a self-evaluation. I would not recommend you stop Simvastatin without your doctor's order.
Given your age, I will propose further laboratory investigations directed towards gut evaluations (in case it is not yet done). Some microbial agents might just be responsible and you might require a full course of antibiotics prescribed by your doctor.
On that note, I wish you the best and wish you a happy and quick recovery.
In the case of any doubts, please feel free to send me a reply and I will be glad to help.
Best wishes
Dr. Nsah
