Question: Dear dr,

I'm sleeping almost 10hours a day. However I always wake up feeling extremely exhausted. Almost eveytime upon waking up , u felt like I had run for few kilometers the night before. It isn't the case , but due to the many dreams I dreamt every day. All kinds of dreams . Some are vivid some are not.

I'm not stress and I'm actually on long holiday now. I can't stop the dreams and I guess they made me tired even after a lot of sleep.

My left upper eyelid twitched for weeks ... I'm feeling tired n dizzy few hours after waking up.....

Brief Answer:
this is acute or chronic; is there any stress?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

This is important concern because even during vacations if someone is unable to relax without adequate reason -- then something is amiss.

You have said that you are unable to sleep properly but you havent mentioned the duration of this problem. The duration helps in deliniating the cause which can lead to this presentation. There can be different reasons behind acute onset and a chronic one. So,try to tell since how long are you finding your sleep non refreshing (even with dreams or without).

Also, plesse see if there is any relation of this disturbed sleep with any stressful event in life or at work..

Usually, in cases similar to yours people do sleep but their mind isint...there are thoughts going on; or random dreams which make one feel exhausted when he gets up....and due to this there is daytime restlessness and weakness and difficulty in concentrating.

This can be managed, dont worry. Give the details of your situation as asked above and we can move ahead in right direction of treatment.

Wish you good health.

Thank you for reply.

I'm having a long summer break and not feeling stress at all. I'm in fact excited that I'm going to be a father soon.

Some days I can sleep more than 10hours until my wife wake me up for lunch. But usually , at that point of time I'm in the midst of some dreams, jux plain dreams nothing scary most of the time. I feel exhausted and I can surely lay on and sleep for another 3 hours or so.
I wake up feeling refresh for a few hours , after awhile I begin to feel kinda dizzy, difficulty focusing and sleepy... If I can bao a little while, I will feel better again for few hours...

I'm always on my iPad or phone either catching up with series , surfing the net etc. Before bedtime, I wonder if my focusing got sometime to do with too much of these. My eyelid is twitching constantly for 3-4 weeks( the dreams and exhaustion began) . My neck and shoulder is tense...

But I don really find any things that are too stressful ...

Brief Answer:
looks like excess screen exposure causing this

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The details given by you almost rule out any depressive condition oranxiety too.

this is more likely due to two things-
1. The excietment related to your new status of becomng a father!!
2. The more valid reason can be your too much exposure to screen. You use i pad etc a lot and almost when you are awake you are sticking to it to follow up series/seasons....

Anykind of electronic gadget acts as mental stimulant and hampers sleep quality. Its a very common problem these days and significantly related to sleeping issues. I have been witnessing this in my clinical practice now a days and even people nearing 40yrs - 50yrs age come up with this . The reduction of screen time helps in such patients.

I would suggest that you try to reduce or fix your daily screen time to one third or one fourth of present. REsearches say that for good health (both physical and mental) screen exposure should not be more than 1-2 hours. And that too should be accompanied by frequent breaks. Every 1/2hour take a break of 5-10min in which you compeltely shut off the screen or just move to a different room.

try to follow this religiously, and stop looking at ipad etc after 4-5pm. This reduction in evening hours is most helpful in handling your issues.

Even the twitching you have been comlaining of can be due to the consistent neuronal stimulation and weakness.

If by following above regimn everything solves but not the twitching- you may go for a brain scan just to be on safer side. Also get your blood pressure checked.

Wish you good helath.
please feel free to ask more queries for clarification.
