Question: My mother in law is taking metoprolol 25mg. She also has memory and confusion problems. She is 85 and healthy as a person 1/3 her age. Last night she went to bed and during the night took her cloths off and was sweating which is rare for her. She also had red wine before and after dinner. I don't know how much. She has shown all the symptoms of dementia. what is happening?

Brief Answer:
Low sugar explains the sweating if she didn't have a proper meal

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,
The symptoms you describe are a known side effect of beta blockers ( The group of drug Metoprolol is a part of ) .
However metoprolol is a new generation beta blocker and is very selextive for heart , hence it doesnt cause other systemic side effects as compared to previous drugs .
So though its a possiblity it is highly unlikely that metoprolol is the cause of her symptoms.
The memory and confusion problems are more commonly explained by her depression and the medication she is taking for the same ie. fluoxetine and lorazepam . Also age is an important faxtor which would cause dementia
However with all medications , there is a trade off between risk and benefit . So all the medicatioj she is on has important effects on her XXXXXXX and the benefit is far more than the side effects .

Now coming to the episode of sweating .
The most common reason for the same is low sugar , particularly if she didn't take proper meal with red wine on that day. If its not the case an cardiac evaluation is justified for her , and if all is normal and all other causes are ruled out metoprolol can be substituted with another drug from calcium channel blocker group after consultation with her doctor .

Hoping i could help .
Let me know if any clarification is needed .
Do rate for others reference .
