Question: I am a 50 year old woman and I feel so exhausted and unmotivated. Apart from an ache in my left knee when going down stairs I do feel fine. I have no passion about anything and it is a struggle just act normal at work. I have been drinking too much alcohol the passed 10 years mainly to ensure I can sleep at night. I am now trying to cut down on my alcohol intake and try to find the vibrant person I used to be. I am now experiencing menopause and this of course has made thing worse. I do not know which end to start to getting myself to have the energy of living. I have had a good number of blood tests the passed year and results are normal. I feel I am wasting my life...I am physically healthy but lack the XXXXXXX I need to be active. Can you help me?

Brief Answer:
Good hydration and exercises along with a good hobby

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. You are physically healthy and non-motivated, as you suggest. Its a cross age, where most of the responsibilities are complete. You may be very well settled and family support from you may be less needed.
2. If you were my patient, I would suggest you to cut down on alcohol, start moderate exercises along with a hobby (anything you can show interest in - like travelling, writing books, listening to music, etc)
3. Alcohol suppresses the mind, and a hangover the following day along with dehydration is going to make you feel exhausted and unmotivated. You need to regularize sleep (between 10-6 at night), and avoid watching TV before sleep.
4. Exercises, in morning and evening, especially aerobic exercises, walking, swimming, jogging etc will increase adrenaline production, which will improve mood and keeps your motivated. Try to move towards a goal - towards a game, you like or with your friends.
5. Hobbies, will keep you interested in doing new things. Try joining a social groups or a new course, to improve your knowledge and making friends. You will never know, until you try.
6. For menopause, If its making worse, better to go for hormonal replacement therapy. Meet your doctor. It will improve you both physically and mentally.

In between, do let me know your hemoglobin levels and thyroid hormone profile. I expect them to be normal. If normal, not to worry.

Also look into good hydration. Concentrate on drinking atleast 6-8 liters of water per day. Protein rich diet is essential to improve immunity.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
