Suggest Treatment For Extreme Dry Mouth With Swollen Uvula

I am a 52 year old obese and diabetic male living in XXXXXXX XXXXXXX For several months now I am experiencing issues with a swollen uvula. There is no associated pain or fever. The only other sympton is an extremely dry mouth (which drinking does not help), and this could be related to having to breath through my mouth to get enough air. My condition is also accompanied by extreme fatigue and sleepiness (possible due to low pO2). The trouble is intermittent throughout the day but occurs daily such that 50 percent or more of the time it is swollen to the point where I am struggling for breath. I am constant swallowing as my body tries to swallow the uvula to clear my throat. My nasal passages are clear and I can breath freely through my nose, but the throat is so closed off that nose breathing is ineffective and I must mouth breath. I do suffer from seasonal allergies, but this has been happen for six to eight months and occurs when indoors, outdoors, and even when traveling in different parts of the country.
Any suggestions for short or long term treatment? (I showed my PCM and he just kind of passed it over as a non-concern)

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your query and understand your concerns.
The common cause of swollen uvula is dryness. A dry throat because of dehydration or sleeping with opened mouth can cause uvula to get infected and swollen.
Some of the causes for your prpblem are:
-Dryness of throat
-Hot foods and beverages that burn the uvula and cause swelling
-Infection (mostly bacteria or virus)
-Alcohol abuse (in some cases)
-Any trauma to the throat
-Mouth ulcers
-Other respiratory tract infections
For this you need to have a hemogram to know if there is an infection and a throat culture to know what organism is causing this actually for proper antibiotic treatment.
You need to find the cause first as if it is dehydration then you need to drink plenty of water and as you are obese you need to workout a little to decrease the fat around your neck.
Try gargling with salt and XXXXXXX warm water to get some relief.
Although antibiotics is the treatment if needed your doctor will prescribe you steriods.
Even antihistaminics are prescribed in some to get some relief from itching and swelling.
Dont worry you can get rid from this but proper management os needed.
Hope this answers your query. Get back if you have more.
Regards,
Dr.Alekhya.
