Question: Hi , I am 26 male. My weight is 51 kg and height is 175cm. As I am under weight I have done lot of blood tests, urine test, stool test, ultra sound scan, ecg, xray. All are normal. In ultra sound scan report it is mentioned that I have Grade 1 fatty liver, but the physician told since LFT is normal no need to take medicines. And prescribed me some protein powders. I would like to know whether there is any other disease that will cause weight lose and fatigue and relevant in my case?

Brief Answer:
Fatty liver is not a concern, please take proper meals and avoid fasting

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
As a radiologist I do ultrasound scans regularly and come across grade I fatty liver in many of my patients when doing scan.

Please find my observations below.
1. More than 10 percent of people without any liver disease might have a fatty liver. If your liver enzyme tests like AST, ALT, ALP and GGT have been done and are normal then there is no need to worry.

2. Fatty liver can be caused due to the following
(i) Fatty liver is a concern in those who have raised liver enzymes as in alcoholics.
(ii) Taking too much fatty foods leads to fatty liver
(iii) Some hereditary conditions also cause fatty liver.
(iv) Fasting for long periods of time can also cause fatty liver.
(v) Infections like hepatitis. Take clean drinking water

3. If obesity runs in your family then please get serum lipid profile test also done. Please reduce alcohol intake if you regularly take it.

4. As far food is concerned, please take balanced meals in sufficient amount and do not skip meals. Protein powders are good for you.

5. As you have loss of weight and tiredness, it is suggested that you get thyroid functions and complete hemogram including peripheral blood smear done as a basic investigation if you have not got it done earlier.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
