Question: Hello, I feel as though I have a lump in my throat. my swallowing and throat clearing always seem incomplete. I snore now, as well, a problem I've never had. I've been told I have globus Hystericus. I don't accept that. There is something physical going wrong. Can you help?

Brief Answer:
Physical causes can lead to globus hystericus

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

The term globus hytericus is applied the the sensation of a lump in the throat when its actually not there. I do agree that now its considered that globus hystericus is not entirely in the mind and can have underlying physiological or anatomical causes even though stress can heighten the problems.

The possible causes of your problem may include the following:
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
Raised upper oesophageal sphincter pressure
Oesophageal motor disorders
Conditions causing irritation or inflammation of the pharynx
Hypertrophy of the base of the tongue
A retroverted epiglottis

It is suggested that you may take a second opinion at clinical examination keeping in mind the above listed causes.

Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
