Suggest Treatment For Fever And Burning Sensation During Urination
Question: my mother is suffering from mild fever 99.5 degrees f since 2 weeks now. Initially she sensed burning sensation while urinating and therefore our family doctor advised us to undergo a urin test The test came negative and therefore the doctor diagnosed viral fever and started antibiotics. Now it's been 2 days since she is having the medicines but the fever is not subsiding, but yes it never got increased from 99.5 degree.
a month back she suffered from stomach infection and had fever which got away in a week
I am not able to understand the cause of this fever. Would be great if you can answer the below questions
1. Is this normal to have 99.5 Degrees when its 45 degrees outside ?
2. What could be possible reason of this prolonged fever
3. Should we continue presuming that it is Viral fever and continue with the antibiotics and wait for the recovery or should we go for any other tests to understand the cause.
4. What are the medical test that we can go for to diagnose the root cause of fever.

Initially many febrile illnesses have similar presentation with constitutional symptoms and it is often difficult to distinguish viral fever from other causes of fever.Viral fever is usually a diagnosis of exclusion as very few viral infections can be confirmed by serological tests. Hence it is logical to continue with the prescribed antibiotics and at the same time to investigate common causes of fever of that particular season or as the clinical findings dictate. I feel a complete blood count,peripheral smear examination including hemo-parasite like malaria and Widal test for typhoid fever would be justified. A person having low grade fever of 99.5 degrees is not normal. Since it is now 02 weeks ,a chest x-ray to exclude tuberculosis is not out of the place,as it is one of the common causes of low grade prolonged fever.
