Suggest Treatment For Fever And Loose Motion In Child

Question: Hi. My daughter, aged 7 Years, had got fever @102F yesterday evening at sudden and some rushes at body. Asked her Doctor on phone, and he prescribed Calpol (250 mg) syrup-6ml every 6 hours for 3 days and Darolac-twice a day. He told to give Oflomac-M Syrup-5 ml twice a day if she has loose motion for more than 6-7 times. My daughter 's body temperature got normal from today morning, but she started having loose motion from today evening and had 6 to 7 loose motions. I gave her Oflomac-M Syrup one dose one hour back. She is continuing Calpol Syrup every 6 hours although she has not got fever from today morning. She had Darolac too. Plz advise about the correct course of medicine. She is not feeling hunger from yesterday and had hardly some bites. Thank You in anticipation, XXXX

I understand your concerns but don't worry. She seems to be suffering from a gastroenteritis episode.I would recommend you to give her Syp. Calpol only if fever spikes are more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. You may repeat it after 6 hours if fever persists.
Continue Syp. Oflomac M for at least 3 days even if the condition improves. If loose motions or fever persists, then complete 5 days treatment is advisable.
Give darolac twice daily for a week. Keep her well hydrated by regular feeds and oral rehydration therapy such as lemonade, butter milk, soups and properly constituted ORS.

Now she is sleeping. If she does not have loose motion repeatedly again XXXXXXX then also should I complete 3 days doses of Oflomac-M or stop it? Should I stop giving her Calpol-250mg Syrup now, since she has not got fever since today morning? How many more Sachets of Derolac she should take after already taken 3 till now? She is not feeling hunger? She was complaining of stomach ache too once today evening around 10pm. Any extra medicine required for diet suppliment? What all should she have in food? She is having classes from tomorrow. Should she attend tution and meditation classes from XXXXXXX morning since she is not having fever now. Thank You & Regards.

Hi
I would recommend you to go for complete 3 days treatment of Oflomac M as it's not advisable to stop it in between. Give Calpol only if fever persists. Else you may stop it. For pain in abdomen you may start her on lanzol junior (15mg) once before breakfast after dissolving in small quantity of water or juice. This helps in gastritis associated with gastroenteritis episode.

Give her one darolac XXXXXXX twice daily for complete 5 days. This will restore her normal gut flora and help in better immunity.

Give her light home made diet such as curd, soups, khichdi, dal-rice, fruits, coconut water etc. Keep her well hydrated by regular oral rehydration therapy.

There is no need for any other medicine at present.

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX
Thank You So Much for your medical advice for my daughter. She is improving now.
Her loose motions have come down and yesterday in the whole day; she had about 6 times; whereas the earlier evening; she had 7 times in two hours only.
I have not given her Calpol since yesterday morning bcoz she is having normal temp.
She had 4 doses of Oflomac-M till now. Should I stop Oflomac after 2 more doses as she would complete a quota of 3 days.
I did not give her the medicine for stomach ache bcoz she did not have stomach ache again.
Now she is having two problems mainly:
1. She has started coughing since yesterday evening. She is allergic and has symptoms of bronchitis since the age of 3 years. She may have got this cough bcoz of the climate change in Pondicherry than XXXXXXX as we are here at vacation till tom; or bcoz of fruits or Chilled Water or AC etc.
What medicine should I give her for cough.
2. She is feeling loose motion after having any solid food like Khidchri, fruits etc.
Is this normal symptoms or you suggest some change in diet. Can she eat apples, banana, grapes in fruits and Idly, Dosa in food.

Plz suggest.

Hi
Good to know about your daughter's improvement. You may stop Oflomac M after 2 more doses as I suggested earlier. Continue with Darolac for complete 5 days. Give her banana and Apple but avoid grapes for the time being. Her frequency will come down gradually so don't worry. You may give idli, dosa, other well cooked food now.

You may use Syp. Salbutamol for allergic cough.
