Suggest Treatment For Fever Due To Sore Throat In A Child
Question: My son is 8 years old and is having acute throat infection and is having high fever which is risen upto 103.5 degree Farenheit. Can I give Meftal to bring down it immediately. Paracetamol is not working. If paracetamol is to be given than what is the ideal dose for a 8 year old kid with a weight 25 kg.

Your 8 years son is having fever due to sore throat and he is taking PARACETAMOL ( but not working according to you ) , ascori-D (dextromethorphan+triprolidine+phenylephreine),good for local effect on throat .
The normal dosage( paracetamol) for 8 years ( weight 25 kg ) is 250-500 mg 4-6 hourly ( maximum 4 dosage in 24 hours i.e .10-15 mg / kg body weight ).
Usually there is no side effects , except nausea , rash mild vomiting( short period).
In my opinion continue this drug for another 3-5 days .
Now about MEFTAL tablet ( mefenamic ) .
Yes , you can give.
This also decreases temperature and also relieve pain at acts immediately .
Dose :25 mg /kg body weight daily in divided doses for up to 7 days .
When such patient visit my clinic I also advise my patient levofloxacin 10 mg / kg body weight ,once in a day for 3-5 days .

I used wet cloth on the forehead to reduce the temperature and gave 7.5ml paracetamol. It came down to 100 for some time about 2 hours but raised again to 102 degree farenheit. His body is fully aching, from head to toe. Also he has developed a little cold.
I will start giving meftal and levofloxacin. Do I continue giving him Ascoril-D or stop it till I am giving levofloxacin. Any other syrup or tablet for cold. The child is very scared as the temperature level is too high.

This is the concern of a mother , but need not to worry.
Sponging with wet cloth is very good . Whenever you feel that son is having high temperature ,use paracetamol .
Continue levofloxacin, ascoril-d and meftal for 4-5 days and son will be alright . As such type of symptoms take 4-5 days .
Liquid diet will be most useful . If son feel mild nausea or vomiting , give him ondansetrone 1/2 tablet of 4 mg mouth dissolving whenever require.
