Question: My 9 y/o daughter has had a fever, sore throat, stuffy nose and cough for 5 days. 2 weeks ago today she was started on Amoxicillin and has finished it as of Saturday. On Friday she developed a high fever 102.0 and it increased to 103.5 on Saturday morning. She is coughing and still running a 99.8 temp as of this morning. I am thinking she has influenza, it is necassary to take her in at this point? I am alternating tylenol and ibuprofen to keep the fever down and Mucinex for the cold symptoms. i am running a warm mist vaporizor as well.

Brief Answer:
Continue the current medications and consult a pediatrician

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for choosing this platform

Most of the time cough/cold with fever in this age occurs due to some viral infection. In viral respiratory infection fever usually starts declining after 48-72 hours and no antibiotic treatment is needed. But here in your case as already more than 72 hours have been passed and also there is past history sore throat where antibiotic was needed; I would suggest you to consult a pediatrician for clinical evaluation and also to assess the need of antibiotic if any. Till then continue Tylenol and ibuprofen for fever. Sponging also helps in bringing down the temperature. Also continue vaporizor and Mucinex for cold.

I hope this helps.
