Suggest Treatment For Flaky Chapped Lips In Sunlight Causing Discomforts
My lips are relatively large and I have skin sensitivity especially to sunlight, and am fair in complexion. My lips flake constantly (white and yellow flakes). I try not to pick them but they're dramatically uncomfortable, not painful though.
I eat a diet that is balanced and am fairly active (golf, walking). I stay hydrated religiously.
What should I do? Is it worth going to a doctor in person, and if so, what would they do?
Initial trial of antifungal drugs will help.
Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,
I understand your concern.
Yes this could possibly be Exfoliative form of cheilitis.
Many of the conditions are usually associated with localized inflammatory fungal association.
Hence a short trial of antifungals like Tab Fluconazole 200 mg once daily for 5 days followed by one tab once a week for 4 weeks.
This will help to eliminate flakes to a large extent.
Topical application of Marigold ointment 10% will also help to prevent fissuring and drying.
Stress and Anxiety control is strongly needed to control the process overall.
Many individuals respond to this therapy.
Once you do not respond to this ,you can think of visiting a doctor, who will then order a biopsy of the scales and appropriate management will be instituted based on the test results.
