Suggest Treatment For Flaky Skin And Acid Reflux While Taking Doxycycline

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Jun 2016
Question: Hey doctor,

I am currently on a prescription of doxycycline 100mg once a day for treatment of my acne for 2 weeks. My skin seems to have a lot of flakeyness I have attached a picture to demonstrate what it looks like. This seemed to start when I started the doxycycline is this normal is it a sign that my skin is healing? It seems to be worse when coming out of a showe

I have noticed after the 4th day I am having a bit of acid reflux trouble especially if I sneeze it seems to hurt my chest. I have had acid reflux troubles quite a few times in the past so its not the first time. The first two days I took the doxy without food but now I have started to have it with food which seems to have helped. One thing though can I take either a Gaviscon antacid or a Zantac 150mg and after how long should I wait for the doxycycline to dissolve before taking an antacid or zantac? Can you also have alchool while on this treatment? r would moisturiser help?

Kind Regds

Brief Answer:
Its due to dehydration of skin.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.

Well these flakes are not due to doxycycline it due to excess dryness of the skin. This dryness is due to loss of moisture probable because of the soap or face wash you are using or due to excess washing or due to less hydration to your body.

I recommend you to continue using Doxycycline , in addition use a better moisturizing soap like Dove or Pears. Yes you can also use Moisturizing cream after your shower and at bed time .

In addition drink plenty of water , avoid very oily food , avoid non veg food , eat more of fruits.

This shall improve your condition.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask.

Thanks for the reply doctor i'll have to get a more gentle cleanser for when i'm in the shower but when I put moisturiser on it seems to get rid of the flakeness and my skin is smooth. In terms of showering would it be better to keep them short could that be a possible reason or cause to the flakeyness? In terms of the second part of my question is it ok to have an antacid or zantac a couple of hours after taking the drug if any acid reflux arises is it also ok to have other medications such as pandol or nureofen whilst on doxycycline? And is alchool ok to have while on this drug?

Brief Answer:
Short showers also helps.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Yes a short shower also helps , if possible let the water be less warm or even cold .

Yes you can take Zantac 20 minutes before meals , also after taking Doxycycline make sure you won't lay down for next 30 minutes .

Moderate consumption of alcohol is ok while on medicine .

Hope this information was helpful.
