Suggest Treatment For Floaters In Eyes

Question: On Saturday I got terrible floaters in my left eye. I went to the eye dr and she said I had a big floaters but it was not attached to the retina so she didn't think it would affect my retina. She checked me while I was dialated. Should I get a seond opinion from a retinal specialist

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed your history. It seems from the history that you are having floaters in left eye. Floaters are because of vitreous degenerations which are usually age related.
Floaters alone does not require further evaluation. Since you were examined after dilatation of the pupil second opinion is not must.
If there is sudden increase in the floaters or association with flashes of light it requires evaluation of the periphery of the retina by a retina specialist to look for retinal problems like retinal tear or retinal thinning.

Hence I feel as of now there is no need for second opinion, however if you develop flashes of light or sudden increase in the floaters you need to consult retina specialist for a second opinion.

I have had some flashes of light but the dr that looked at me said she did not see any retinal tears or detachment. Still Ok

Since the doctor has looked for retinal tears and retinal detachment by dilated fundus examination no need to worry.

But presence of flashes of light does warrant requirement for examination of retina by a ophthalmologist trained in retina.
Hence as I had mentioned in the previous answer if flashes of light is present it requires evaluation by a retina specialist.
Hence I advice you to get a second opinion from a retina specialist as if at all any lesion of the peripheral retina if present can be appropriately treated by laser thus preventing the risk of development of retinal detachment.
