Suggest Treatment For Folliculitis

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Oct 2016
Question: I have folliculitis and wrote to your doctors. they advised me to use the antiseptic and doxycycline tablets. I used the antiseptic for about 5days . it was hydrogen peroxide and I think this has irritated the skin slightly even though the folliculitis has improved. I would like to know what to use on the skin itself now which is dry, slightly peeling and a little red and blistery from the hydrogen peroxide I bought from the pharmacist

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,

Thank you for following up with me.

I am happy to hear that you are a bit better with folicullitis.

Yes, Hydrogen peroxide makes the skin dry, that is why we talked about using an hydrating cream after it.

But since it looks like the cream it is not enough, then the next step it is:

-- Wash your skin with warm water...hot water would make it more dry.
-- Apply moisturizing cream 2-3 times/day.
-- Drink plenty of water and keep being hydrated.
-- If the folicullitis return, this time don't use the hydrogen peroxide, but just use a triple antibiotic cream, or ideal would be using Mupirocin cream/ointment. Apply a bit in the nose nostrils, because the root of bacteria that cause folicullitis it is from there.

Let me know if you have other questions.

I want to send some picture of when the problem first started, the use of the hydrogen and doxycycline and the pictures today. you will see the photos as taken on the 1st September when problem first addressed and 12th September. the photos are dated. I am unsure if the red blotchy marks are from burning of the hydrogen peroxide or something else. The bumps are gone but some red marks are still there or look like large burn areas.

Brief Answer:
Use steroid cream combined with an antifungal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for the follow up with me.
I saw carefully the pictures.

It is not burning from Hydrogen peroxide...it does not burn the skin.
I confirm that from the first photos in was folicullitis. The skin clearly looks dry.

In the last photos, the skin still looks a bit dry but better. Seems like an eczema has developed after the folicullitis because there is some inflammation.

Something important to keep in mind it is to be careful from sun exposure during the time you are using doxacycline because it gives hypersensitivity from the sun. So if you have been to the beach or exposed your legs directly to the sun, then we have found the cause of it.

I would recommend using a mild steroid cream combined with an antifungal cream. The steroid component would heal the inflammation and the antifungal part would keep the skin moist and also health the round circles which look like an overlapping fungal. Use them twice/day for 1 week...and give the skin time to heal from the scarring.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Regards.
