Question: I am a nurse working in a hosp setting with a co worker that claims to be allergic to ham. Not the consumption of ham but to the exposure of ham. She states she has respitory distress even if ham is in a closed container in the refrigerator. Is this possible? She can't care for a patient if their visitors are eating ham. I work in labor and delivery.

Brief Answer:
Possible but rare

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
It is possible, but rare and usually there is allergy reaction only when ham is eaten or sometimes if there is skin contact. If there is no such contact and she has reaction then this is more likely to be psychological reaction rather than allergic reaction. Wish you good health. Regards
