Viral diarrhea - stop antibiotics
Detailed Answer:
Hi...
1. It seems your kid is having viral diarrhoea. Sometimes whenever ORS is given, th3e kid might pass some loose stools. Unless the kid is dehydrated, you need not worry. i have mentioned the danger signs, in point 3.
2. Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better.
3. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.
4. There is no need to use antibiotics (Metrogyl or Metronidazole) unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhoea. Please stop them.
5. I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days)
6. ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment.

Dr. Sumanth MBBS., DCH., DNB (Paed).,
My baby has passed urine only once in the morning at 8 am. She had solids (4 spoons of first bytes wheat), and slept for 1 and half an hour. Then she woke up and vomited most of the solid. Took some ors , had bath and slept. Then woke up and we tried to keep solid again ,but she refused them with crying. Then drank milk from mother then slept again.
She is not taking liquids as she took them demanding whole yesterday.
Loose motions are still on. 4-5 tymes since morning.
Please advise.
Please take to nearest emergency room
Detailed Answer:
Hi....you have mentioned that she has consumed 2 liters of ORS yesterday. But now she's not having that much. Another issue is its already its 3pm. So its almost 7hours since she has passed urine.
This is a sign that she's getting dehydrated. Moreover you say she's sleepy.
I suggest you take her to the nearest emergency room. She will need intravenous fluid replacement.
Kindly get back to me with information on what happened after you go there.
Regards - Dr. Sumanth
We have taken her to hospital yesterday at 7 pm. We have planned to take her immediately after your response, but she woke up in no time and had solids and played well. Took milk and ors also. Before 7 pm, she had another round of sold which made us strong..we made a weight check and she gained near about 200 gm.
Doctor told that Infection still exists and ors and echonorm to be continued for 2 more days along with tolerable solids.
Motions are still going on how ever reduced now and took solid in the morning, barli water, milk and slept now. She also passed urine twice in today morning, although she passed only twice whole yesterday( it was sleepless night for us to watch her passing urine).
Can we start her regular diet flow and medicines? We feed her 4 times a day and give d3 drops and gripe water once.
She is due for measles vaccine last week but doctor postponed by a week to see that she comes out of this infection and check on weight gain.
Any,advise to increase her wieght? She born with 2.6 kgs before 3 weeks of her actual due date( normal delivery). Now she is 6.2 and 9 months completed.
Viral diarrhea - Settling
Detailed Answer:
Hi...happy to hear that her diarrhea is better.
1. Please start regular diet.
2. Do not give antibiotic as I mentioned earlier.... It might aggravate.
3. You can give her vitamin D.
4. Gripe is not required, but it doesn't do any harm.
5. Her birth weight is appropriate. But now at 9 months completed, 6.2kg is less than 5th centile. But if the 6.2 you are quoting is now after diarrhea, then it's understandable as 80% of body weight is water and it is what is lost during diarrhea. But as the diarrhea starts settling, her weight will naturally improve. Do not worry.
6. But if her weight is 6.2 before diarrhea, then she's underweight. I suggest you give her calorie dense food. Any food is made calorie dense by adding ghee or oil to it.
7. When there is diarrhea, do not give fruit juices as the high sugar content in juices will make diarrhea worse.
