Suggest Treatment For Frequent Recurrent Hives On Different Parts Of The Body Leading To Itching And Redness
Question: My wife has been taking 50mg of Zoloft for about 8 weeks. 3 days ago she developed the symptoms of hives - red, itchy skin and numerous small welts. The location of this changed location frequently. The ER doc prescribed Benadryl. She has been taking this about every 3 to 6 hours as needed also with a steroid once a day. This seemed to help. This morning about 90% of her body is inflamed, though there are no welts. Itching /burning is intense. Since the Benadryl and steroids are not keeping up, should she cut back the Zoloft to 25mg? Being Sunday she will not be able to contact her primary physician until tomorrow.
Brief Answer:
The dose can be reduced
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Sertraline is a very safe SSRI drug. It’s very less likely to develop hives or itching with this drug especially on 8th week of treatment. But since she is not on any other drugs so in present situation best is to stop drug and consult her doctor. She can reduce the dose to 25 for a couple of days followed by stopping the drug and seeing doctor.
Please let me know if you have more doubts.
Thanks
