Suggest Treatment For Gastrointestinal Problem Due To Diabetes Medication
Question: I am having a gastrointestinal problem due to medication I am taking for diabetes type II. It is metformin. I have a lot of gas, diarrhea, bloating and just constant discomfort in my stomach (I think this is the problem). When I do not take this medication, my symptoms decrease. I was taking another medication, but my insurance will no longer pay unless I pay $700 for a 3 month supply. This is out of the question. Need help.
Where are you?
Brief Answer:
Fiber supplements
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.
Yes, you are right. Tab Metformin does cause gastrointestinal discomfort and other symptoms you have. This happens due to undigested sugars present in the stool which drags water into the large intestines and the bacterial digestion of such sugars produce gas leading to the symptoms.
This can be alleviated by taking fiber supplements like Psyllium husk which prevent excess water into the intestinal lumen and also less possibility of gas formation.
You can also take preparations of Racecadrotil 100mg which will reduce the water into the intestines.
Hope, I answered your query.
Wish you good health.
regards,
