Suggest Treatment For Genital Warts On Vulva When Diagnosed With Crohn's Disease

Posted on Thu, 9 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, my daughter is 23 years old. She was diagnosed with crohn's disease since 10 years. She is on remicade since 2011. 10 days ago she noticed genital warts on vulva. I think she had oral see ( I am not sure) as she is still vergin. We visited the doctor and she prescribed Aldara-cream for her.
I am extremely worried and concerned. Kindly advice if Aldara-cream is ok, doeas this mean she will have cancer? Will the warts always remain due to immune suppression? Will she have them for ever?

Brief Answer:
does not mean she sill have cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Aldara is a good treatment for genital warts. If the aldara does not completely get rid of the warts, there are other ways such as freezing for them to be removed. There are multiple strains of Human Papiloma Virus (HPV). The strains that cause warts are not the same strains that predispose women to cervical cancer. Even if she does also have those high risk strains, if she gets regular pap smears she can avoid getting cervical cancer because they can find precancerous cells before they become cancer.
Just encourage her to get regular pap smears and to follow up with her gynecologist if the Aldara does not get rid of the warts.

Thank you for your answer.
But if Aldara-cream works or if she freezes them will they appear again and again because of immune suppression or is there a way to avoid them coming again eg. avoid sex, vaccine, vitamins etc.

Brief Answer:
vaccine is good if she has not had it

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
There is no definite answer for this. If she is on long term immunosuppressants for her Crohn's disease then it could be a recurrent problem. The best thing she can do is get them treated when they appear and get the HPV vaccine series. It would be good for her to take a multivitamin/multimineral liquid supplement and extra vitamin C and fish oil, just to keep her immune system functioning at it optimum levels.
If she can exercise and eat healthy foods that would be helpful as well

Dr Robinson
