Question: Hi doctor
My mother has Carcinoma Cancer. Afrer operation she is going through chemo. After second chemo, her right hand wrist has become hard. I have attached a photo. We are applying a solution on this daily and having this bandaged all the time. Doctor has asked to keep it bandaged.
Can you suggest reasons for this. How this will impact next chemo which is due on 10th nov this week. Can you suggest treatment.

Brief Answer:
Hello dear. It looks like cellulitis or extravasation

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. I have seen the picture. It looks like a case of either chemo extravasation(spill of chemo into skin) or cellulitis. This is a usual problem with cannulation. This can be prevented by the use of picc line which delivers chemo directly into the big bloid vessel near heart. You can discuss picc with your doctor. This swelling will heal in about 3weeks.no need to worry.
Thanks and regards

Thanks Doctor,

So you mean to say next chemo will not be done through hand's veins.? it will be done through incision in the neck or heart?

is there any consequences which we should be concerned of. Will be there any swelling in the veins of shoulder in future if chemo delivered through this way.

Brief Answer:
Picc is inserted in arm

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. Picc catheter is inserted in arm near elbow. There is no need to give incision in neck or heart. It is very safe and easy to handle. Complications are very rare and extravasation doesnot occur. No long term complications as well.
Thanks and regards
