Suggest Treatment For Headache Post Suffering A Concussion

Question: Hello! I suffered a concussion (mild) approx. 6 mos ago and also had a fracture in the back left as well as a brain bleed. I spent I week in the hospital (no surgery needed), rested for a couple of months and am now seeing a therapist 3X a week in my home as well as physiotherapy 2X per week. It has been a long hard road and I feel that I am making good progress. I am slowly getting back to my old self. Yesterday afternoon my husband took me to town for an apt and when we got home I was reaching into the back seat of the car for my bag, went to back out of the car and lightly bumped the back of my head (not the top but just behind that above my ponytail), on the outer edge of the door frame. I do not have a bump or redness but I can mildly feel where I banged it. I have been so careful. Anyway I was immediately panicked and wanted to know if I have in any way reinjured myself or if I just gave myself a little bruise and would this impact my initial injury? I am worried. I am also 51 years old and am only taking bisoprolol and hydrochlorathiaxide (low dose) for high blood pressure. The only thing I take for my headaches is Tylenol #1's with codeine as they don't want me taking any blood thinners. Should I be worried about the light bang since I've had a bleed and should I have a CT??? Please advise. Thank you for your time. Today I asked my physiotherapist about my bump and he said don't worry about it, but I am worried and greatly wanted your opinion. One thing that I forgot to mention was the last approx. 2 weeks I have had some pressure on the top of my head with some eye pain, but physio and my therapist says that is normal as they are doing balance exercises and eye therapy. I don't know if this is relevant information. My bang on my head was behind that, I guess on the round part in front of my ponytail.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry much more than necessary.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HealthcareMagic.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

First, the condition of six months ago was traumatic brain injury, not only concussion.

However, since 6 months passed, the first damage is considered to be healed and has nothing or too little to do with the last head injury.

I don't think you need to worry much more than necessary about the last episode since you didn't experience any signs of brain dysfunction such loss of consciousness, amnesia, nausea or vomiting, lethargy, vision issues, etc.

Just rest for a couple of days, use Tylenol or Ibuprofen in case of mild headaches.

I don't think CT scan is necessary at this moment.

In case you notice any of above-mentioned symptoms, then get a medical evaluation and CT scan of the head.

Hope you found the answer helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

I haven't had any of the symptoms that you had mentioned. Would this last episode be considered a head injury or just a bump with possibly some bruising? You wouldn't consider it a new concussion would you? I imagine that I would have had to hit my head quite a bit harder? The spot does hurt a bit since I hit it, but feels more like a bit of a bruise, I was just worried because this experience has not been one that I would like to repeat and I have been trying to do my therapy and at the same time be very careful of any other injury. At this point am I able to use an anti inflammatory such as Ibuprofen? I was told no blood thinning, but it has been a while. Would you also recommend an MRI or a CT scan at some point as a follow up to check on the initial injury? Thank you for your time. XXXXXXX :)Also, now since I've had this first injury how easy will it be to possibly get another concussion? Will it be possible from a lighter injury or am I way off base and still take a greater force? One question that I forgot to ask you was about taste and smell. I lost my taste and smell completely, but now it has been coming back here and there. Some days it is good and then other days very little to not at all. Will this also settle? Thank you. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Minor bump.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

Since there are no symptoms there is no concussion or brain injury ( clinically speaking ), it is considered as a minor bump.

By now, the possibility of another concussion is similar to normal people.

Taste and smell should return with time since there is some improvement.

Hope I helped you.

Take care.
