Question: First - my husband had a heart attack 5 years ago requiring 2 stents, no damage occurred. He took meds for a while and stopped. He had another attack 2 years ago in the left area with damage. He took meds for awhile and stopped. He currently takes his meds. He did a stress test and it showed 25% use of heart. He then did a muga and pet scan and he stated 18% use of heart and it has grown significantly. He regularly goes to the gym, he is 53 years young. What recommendations do you have for us?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking to HCM!

First of all I would recommend taking the medication as prescribed by your cardiologist and to regularly follow up every six month.

Secondly i would recommend a healthy life style and diet. It's a good thing that he exercise regularly and try to eat healthy. Moreover i encourage to stop smoking (if he smoke) or to reduce alcohol intake (stop drinking is the best thing to do in his case).

Thirdly i would recommend contacting an interventionist cardiologist to discus about re-synchronization therapy or ICD (implantable cardiac defibrillator). Because not all patient with heart failure profit from such invasive procedures and the patients should be selected with care.

At last I would recommend to discus with your cardiologist about transplant list. If all the mentioned procedure fail to stabilize your husband health condition then heart transplant is the last thing to do.

Hope you will find this of help!
Wish you and your husband health!

If your heart is damaged from the heart attack and they say it's 18-25%, what is the average life span of this person? How long can a heart function at this rate?

Hi and thank you for following up!

The average life span of patients with a heart damage like your husband is 7 years. However this is an average and should be taken with reserves because it depend from patient to patient. I have seen my patient with the same heart damage to survive after 15 years.

Wish you and your husband health!

Thank you. What can you tell me what re-synchronization therapy is? How invasive is a (implantable cardiac defibrillator)? Also, how long is the hospitalization time frame for an ICD? What is the down time afterwards?

Brief Answer:
Detailed specifications about the procedures...

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome back!

Re-synchronization therapy is one of the invasive procedures which are done to improve cardiac function. The procedure consist in synchronization of cardiac beats between atrial and ventricular chambers by inserting pacemakers in the heart. This procedure in well selected patients is done together with the insertion of ICD.

The ICD insertion is an invasive procedure which needs 2 (a maximum of 5 if complicated) days of hospitalization. After the discharge from hospital there's no down time.

Hope this answer your queries!
