Question: I am flying to XXXXXXX next week, I am really concerned as I have been told I have a hiatus hernia and gastritis, I was in extreme pain a month ago and ended in hospital for 2 days this is how I found out I had these illnesses. I'm concerned about being on the flight and the pain gets very intense again, what would you recommend? I'm also worried about strangulation hernia what if that happened on the plane? I'm also thinking will roller coasters make my symptoms worse and can it do more damage

Brief Answer:
Hiatus hernia does not usually get strangulated

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
Hiatus type hernias do not usually get strangulated. They often cause reflux. If you have this type of hernia and gastritis you need to be on a proton pump inhibitor such as omeprazole when you are traveling. Also bring some extras in case you get in pain during the flight. When you fly you should drink plenty of water, not much food and no alcohol or caffeine. Roller coasters should be no problem. Have fun.
Regards.

I have a sliding hiatus hernia can this not get strangulated? I'm also on 40mg of lansoperazole per day, if it got worse on the plane the pain how many tablets can you take in a day? I'm also taking Vit b12, vit c, slippery elm, Aloe Vera can any of these interact or stop lansoperazole working thank you

Brief Answer:
sliding hiatal hernias are not the type that get strangulated

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your follow up.
The type of hernia you have is not the type that gets strangulated. The type of hiatal hernia that may become strangulated is a paraesophageal hernia, not a sliding hiatal hernia. If you have more pain on the flight you could take one extra lansoprazole. None of the vitamins/supplements you mention will stop lansoprazole from working.
Have a great flight.

Thank you I'm going to try and relax about the flight. Can you get rid of gastritis? And which is the best anti inflammatory for this, I can not have NSAIDs.

Brief Answer:
Yes, no NSAIDs

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your follow up.
The best things to do are to avoid foods that can irritate the stomach lining. Avoiding caffeine, alcohol and tobacco are very important. Very acidic foods like tomatoes and citrus can also be irritating. If you want to add supplements try adding a probiotic and turmeric to your diet daily
Good luck to you.
