Suggest Treatment For High BP Accompanied With Headache

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Oct 2016
Question: I have been experiencing high blood pressure for about 3 weeks now that I know of. I started tracking my blood pressure when I had an extreme headache and fatigue, the headache wasn't a migraine but just as severe in a different way. I had been taking a lot of ibuprofen and may have been experiencing rebound headaches. I haven't taken any ibuprofen for over 3 weeks but the high blood pressure persists. When my diastolic number gets over 100 I experience worse fatigue than I have ever felt even having the flu. I have a doctors appointment on the 28th.

Brief Answer:
Take treatment and steps as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
High blood pressure may be age related hypertension.
What are the readings?
You need to get ecg or echo to diagnose if the increased blood pressure is of recent onset or old.
Any renal disease or renal stone?
For maintaining normal blood pressure you can start with decreased salt intake and regular exercise.
Drugs can be started if blood pressure is raised persistently.
Headache may also improve with controlled blood pressure, adequate sleep and decreased stress.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

For the last three weeks I have taken my blood pressure at least twice a day at different times of day. The average is 157/91, the highest I have experienced which cause the physical symptoms of fatigue, headache, stiff neck and back are 169/104, 184/100, & 171/107.

I have never eaten much salt and have started an exercise regime before I started experiencing these symptoms.

No renal disease or renal stones, I tend to drink the recommended amount of water and do not drink soda or other sugary drinks at all. I live a lifestyle that is what is recommended to reduce blood pressure to begin with so I am at a complete loss as to what I can do to improve it on my own and I do not like prescription drugs.

I have my yearly OB/GYN visit on the 28th and do not have a PCP. But I am hopeful that she will be able to help but I have become more concerned since the diastolic has been higher off and on and that is what causes the physical symptoms.

Brief Answer:
Take medications as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
It seems you are suffering from essential hypertension and no secondary cause is present.
Since the readings are in the higher range and you are already following lifestyle modifications, you need to start antihypertensive drugs.
ACE inhibitors or amlodipine can be taken along with diuretics.
An initial trial of only diuretic can be done.
