Suggest Treatment For High BP When Suffering From Cold And Fever

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Oct 2014
Question: My mother has cold/cough since last 2 days and since morning she is having body pain and shivering, temperature and head ache.
She took crocin in the morning and allegra in the evening.

We went to doctor around 30 minutes back and doctor measured the BP to be - 220/110.

He prescribed below medicines:

Amolzaar 1-0-1
Sinarest 1-0-1
Ascoril syrup

Paracetomal injection.

Are these medicines good enough to take care of Cold fever + High BP?

Is BP very high that we really need to be concerned? Do we need to hospitalize?
Do we need to be besides her the whole night if we are at home?

Please clarify and also give your number so that I can talk.

Brief Answer:
That blood pressure is unsustainably high

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX Thanks for coming to HealthCareMagic. The BP as measure by your GP in the office is unsustainably high and this needs to be checked every hour on the hour until the BP comes down to an acceptable level. Hopefully the Amlozaar that was prescribed will do the trick. She should see some sort of improvement within an hour of taking it.

IF, it does not get better within the next hour or 2, then I would strongly suggest you take her to the Emergency room for IV medication to control the BP as those numbers can lead to Heart attack and Stroke.

The cold medication that she may have taken before might be causing this, or something totally unrelated to the cold may be the culprit. No matter what though, this condition needs to be monitored and managed under professional circumstances if it persists.

So please keep checking the BP tonight until it is back down to normal.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for prompt response doctor.

She is sound asleep.

She said she was feeling much better around 10.30 pm but she displayed some symptoms of short of breadth.

But now she is very comfortably sleeping making snoring noise (she normally snores while sleeping).
Should I keep waking her up regularly and monitoring the BP every hour?

Thinking of calling nurse home and have her check BP now.
It is almost an hour since she checked her BP.

Brief Answer:
BP issues

Detailed Answer:
Hi, am sorry for not having responded to you earlier. I trust your mom did well that night. Normally if the patient is calm and comfortable.. i don't want to make things worse by checking BP very very often. But those numbers were pretty scary.

I hope that you will set up an appointment for her to get the medications better managed. Stamlo might not be enough.

If her BP stays up in the 140-150 range regularly, then we have to begin checking her heart for problems like enlargement etc. We also have to make sure her coronary arteries (the arteries that supply blood to the heart) are also healthy.
The best screening tests for that are en ECHOcardiogram and an ECG.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.
She is back to normal.

We checked BP next day and it came down to 125, so doctor asked us to discontinue taking amolzaar. So she is back with normal "stamol" - one per day.

Her BP is stable around 125 - 130 for last 2 days.

Every year or two she undergoes complete master health checkup. It is due this year. We can take that.

She took just crocin/allegra and high BP could not be because of medicines.
Can you please clarify why her BP suddenly went to levels above 180?
Have you come across such instances?
Is there a possibility of this repeating again?
Can this be ignored or can she get this again when she gets cold/flu?

Brief Answer:
Not 100% sure what caused this

Detailed Answer:
Hey XXXXXXX I'm not exactly sure why this happened. Normally certain medications which are used as decongestants can cause blood pressure spikes... i've never seen that happening to anyone who is on Allegra.

The other common cause of such spikes in BP is when the patient just forgets to take their medication that day.

Finally, infections, on their own will sometimes cause changes in the BP that are unpredictable. When you have an infection.. your adrenal gland tends to become more active and release natural steroids into the blood stream. They can cause an increase in blood pressure. That increase should be just a few points... not a jump to 220/110.

Finding the cause of this sudden spike is what I really want to focus on. The master health checkup that she goes through should be more than enough to find out what is going on. So I suggest she get that done sooner rather than later.

I wish I could have given you an exact cause for the spike in BP, but i'm not sure in this case. Nevertheless, the plan remains the same, let her get her checkup done and we can go over the results.
