Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: I'm on altace norvasc for high blood pressure and in the mornings from 5am to noon my pressure is very high 160/70 170/ 90 etc. it goes down only when I take my painkiller a percoset and a 1mg lorazepam .is the psinkiller and lorazepam not making my blood pressure meds work? I take the altace in the morning and the norvasc at bedtime. But at five am my headaches and that's when I know my bp is high. I go check it. I'm a 58 year old male who has been on these meds for years. Do I now have blood pressure resistance due to using all these meds together. Particularly the percoset and lorazepam .but they seem to drop my blood pressure to normal levels. Or would different blood pressure meds help?

Brief Answer:
the headache probably causes your blood pressure to rise

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

the blood pressure is very sensitive to various stimuli. Pain is one of them. Painful stimuli make the blood pressure rise even in individuals without hypertension. So your headaches are the most likely cause of your blood pressure increases.

Percocet takes the pain away and lorazepam helps reduce the psychological stress and also relax your muscles, both causing your blood pressure to get lower, as you've already noticed. None of these drugs may cause your hypertension to worsen! Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may do so, but none of the drugs we're talking about is a NSAID.

Try to measure your blood pressure only when you're absolutely calm and pain-free. Otherwise a high measurement would be certain. When you find high measurements take another couple of measurements and use the mean value of the two lowest values as the correct blood pressure. If - after checking your blood pressure this way - you still find high measurements then a change to your regimen would be recommended.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
