Posted on Sat, 12 Jul 2014
Question: Hi, I think I have altitude sickness. Friday night and Saturday night I camped at 11,800 feet. I live at 6300. Sunday morning I became very nauseous and vomited continually through the day. Felt better last night, planned on going to work today. Woke up very tired and vomited again.

Question is: how to speed my recovery.

Brief Answer:
Be relaxed. Antiemetic, acetazolamide

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I went through the query and understood your concern.

Yes. Your symptoms suggests mountain/high altitude sickness.

Now be relaxed. The best treatment for this is descent to the lower area. Since you have returned from the high altitude you will be recovered very fast.

Few measures for your faster recovery
1. Don't exert yourself.
2. Be relaxed, you will be alright soon.
3. open windows and sleep in good ventilation room.
4. Have nutritious limited food.
5. Plenty of water, good hydration.
Alcohol, smoking and any sleeping pills should be avoided.

If still vomiting present then anti emetic Tab ondansetron or metoclopramide will help you. If still symptoms persists then Acetazolamide 250 mg twice daily will help you. If symptoms worsens then you require oxygen therapy.

I hope this information helps you and answered your question. Feel free to ask if any further query and I will be glad to answer them.

Wish you good health.

Regards

Thank you. I am feeling normal now.

When I researched altitude sickness on line, the symptoms didn't exactly match, because for me, it presented a lot like food poisoning. Have you seen my symptoms before? Just curious, thank you.

Brief Answer:
suggest mountain sickness. may be food poisoning

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Good that you are back to normal.
In food poisoning the nausea and vomiting will be associated with pain abdomen, loose stools, fever etc and other people who had the same food may suffer.
But in context to journey to high altitude and symptoms disappearing with time when returning back suggest more towards high altitude sickness. Nausea and vomiting are common presentations in high altitude sickness.

Anyway now you are back to normal.
I wish you fun filled life with good health.

Regards
