Suggest Treatment For High Blood Pressure
In my family we have high blood pressure and strokes on both my parents sides.
Maybe a year ago or so I noticed my blood pressure jumped up to 180 / 130
so I decided to make some changes in my life , I have a siting job , so I decided to
walk and exercise 3-5 times a week . I try to get at least 10000 steps per day. I get my pulse up , between 130 and 170 during the exercise . Today I went to the store and decided to test my BP and it read
180/65 .
I'm very worried on what I should do . How will this change my life .
I like to drink sometimes , I like to have sex a lot ( too much ) I use Viagra and or Cealis on regular basis and I'm very scared to loose those things.
Knowing I do exercise , I smoke socially maybe once a week with alcohol ( but I do not inhale.) I only Puff.
My question s : What should I do , any tests that you would recommend ?
How will this effect my sex life ? Can I still take Viagra and Cialis ?
Should I be taking Aspirin 81mg daily ?
Overall what would you tell me to do if I were your patient ?
Tests; suspicion for high blood pressure.
Detailed Answer:
Hello, Mr. XXXX! Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I am Dr. Meriton. I understand your concern.
High blood pressure is a diagnosis that has to be established after careful measurements and, maybe, after some tests are done. Due to various hormonal, physiological and psychological fluctuations that happen in a day, blood pressure figures can variate as well. To estimate it more precisely, it should be measured after you have been at least 15 minutes in resting state and after you have drunk caffeine-containing or alcoholic beverages. It should also be measured in both arms. However, I would recommend a 24-hour blood pressure monitor, as it describes more precisely the blood pressure figures spun throughout 24 hours. If there is a constant high blood pressure, when you get your results, other possible causes should be sought and you should run these tests:
- urea and creatinine
- electrolytes
- vanylmandelic acid in urine.
Viagra and Cialis are both phosphodieaterase inhibitors, and are not known as blood pressure raising agents. The opposite may happen: long-standing hypertension can cause erectile dysfunction, which makes you take these agents. However, if the essential hypertension diagnosis is established, and proper treatment is installed to control it, you should quit using them, as they tend to enhance the effect of blood pressure-lowering agents, down to dangerous figures of blood pressure. As for te heart rate, it is normal to go up when exercising, and yours would go up to 182 beats per minute and is considered normal (the formula being 220-age). I would recommend that you continue your sex life, and only seek medical attention and advice if hypertension diagnosis is established. As for the aspirin usage, I recommend withholding from using it, at the moment.
I hope I was helpful with my answer. If you have further questions, I would be happy to help. If you do not, I kindly ask you to close the discussion and rate the answer.
