Suggest Treatment For High Body Temperature In Children

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX I spoke to you yesterday about changes in in my speech. My whole family has been suffering from a "cruddy" cold that has lingered for weeks. My little boy has tended to spike a fever on the weekends. I take him to the doctor, he gets better, but alas comes back again within the week. I thought that he was just being re-exposed with preschool, but he has not been back for a few weeks and is again running 101.4 fever as of this evening. Perhaps it is a bit paranoid of me, but I was wondering about Enterovirus 68. I know that the public health professionals hoped that it might disappear with the winter season, but they expressed uncertainty. I can see that the incidence has certainly tapered off, but are there cases still circulating and is it something to still be on watch for? I apologize if I am asking a ridiculous question.
question is not ridiculous
Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for your question.
First of all I will answer your question of "is it still something to watch out for?" The answer to that is yes, it is still a concern, but as you have noted it is on the decline and so is not as much of a concern as it has been in the past. If you are concerned about this you can ask your doctor to check him for this virus specifically.
Whenever a child has a temperature over 100 we suspect a bacterial infection, such as an ear infection or pneumonia. So if he has a high fever he should always see a doctor to rule that out. Sometimes when children are sick repeatedly their immune system gets run down and they have trouble fighting off infections. Make sure he has a healthy diet with a minimum of junk food and that he is taking a multivitamin daily. I hope he is better soon
Regards,
