Suggest Treatment For Hypothyroidism
Question: My wife is suffering from hypothyroidism from last 3 years ie the time when she became pregnant. She delivered a baby boy in 2013. She was taking thyronorm 150 during pregnancy due to which her tsh level was around 0.80. Now she is taking dose of 125 mcg. But now her tsh level is around 5. She has frquent cough problem due to which her voice becomes thick and she finds difficult to swallow food. What is the remedy. Is there any cure for hypothyroidism ?

Welcome to HCM. I have gone through the question and understand your concerns.
She is having underfunctioning thyroid for more than 3 years and so she will be having permanent hypothyroidism. This could be due to hashimoto's hypothyroidism in which thyroid gland is permanently damaged by thyroid antibodies.
The answers to your questions:
1. She has to increase the dose of thyronorm as her TSH is slightly high. Once on treatment, the TSH has to be below 3 miu/ml. Higher TSH may cause thyroid swelling and cause neck discomfort or chronic cough. You can do an ultrasound neck to see if it is actually produced by an enlarged thyroid gland
2. There is no permanent cure for hypothyroidism. We can only replace the thyroid hormone deficiency. The treatment has to be life long.

Is this life threatning? Does thyronorm have long term side effects?

This is just a hormone replacement. Her thyroid is not producing enough thyroid hormones, so we are replacing thyroid hormones as thyronorm.
If given at proper dose and monitoring, thyronorm is not associated with any long term side effects.
