Question: Our two year granddaughter has a bug bite most likely a tick bite on the back of her head. Should we get her on amocycilin right away as a precaution (and what would be side effects) or just monitor the bite and watch for rash. This is in Northern California. Thanks, Alan Gratzer YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
It's Not recommended

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM.

*It is not recommended to have prophylactic antibiotics for tick bite since just minor number of bites end up with Borrelia infection and it would manifest with fever and rash spreading within 2-3 days.

Also, antibiotics may have side effects especially in the younger age group of children.

Lastly, antibiotics will be completely ineffective if these are given earlier, with respect to, when the actual signs of infections occur (due to resistant bugs).

Please let me know if there's any furher queries.
Wish you good health.
Regards
