Question: I have been deprived of sleep for a long time now; I get about three or four hours every night. Lately, I have been having episodes where my palms get sweaty, I feel really dizzy and feel like I'm going to have a heart attack. Are these symptoms common results of sleep deprivation?

Sleep deprivation can cause number of physical and psychological effects.

The symptoms of dizziness, sweaty palms and feeling of heart attack are suggestive of anxiety caused by lack of sleep.

I have some suggestions for you which might help you:
1. Practice relaxation exercises like deep breathing and meditation.
2. Drink a glass of cold water whenever you have such symptoms.
3. Avoid caffienated drinks, especially at bedtime.
4. Donot listen to loud music while going to bed.
5. Avoid heavy fatty meals in dinner.
6. Avoid daytime nap for a better night's sleep.
7. At the time of intense anxiety, drugs like klonopin (prescription drug) can help.
