Question: I have allergies and am experiencing some irritation in my throat and upper chest and trees are really blooming right now. I don't have trouble breathing but I wonder if there is a way to treat the irritation? I take Zyrtec for my allergies. I am also experiencing some dry mouth.

Hello and welcome,

I'm sorry you are having allergies to some of the tree pollen. I can relate to this!

Some things you can try:

1. I'd suggest taking the Zyrtec 2x/day, but if you are already experiencing dry mouth from it, probably stick with the 1x/day.

2. Add on a nasal steroid such as Flonase, which can be bought without prescription at drug stores. This can decrease stuffiness and runny, itchy noses, and also decrease post nasal drainage which might be giving you the upper chest symptoms and throat irritation. It may take a few days to start working well. Follow the pictures on the information in the package which will help minimize it's going down your throat (which, for some people, can also be irritating).

3. After being outside, use a saline rinse to wash your nose and sinuses. A nettipot is good, or if you want more convenience, there are ready made saline sprays you can purchase such as Simply Saline. Don't do any rinses for an hour before or half hour after the steroid spray or it will wash it out.

4. Change your clothes when you come in from outside. This will minimize your duration of exposure to the pollen.

5. Don't sleep with the windows open. This also increases your duration of exposure.

I hope these suggestions help. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.
