Suggest Treatment For Itchiness In The Throat
Question: For the past two days I have had an annoying itchy throat, not sore and can swallow no problem. Yesterday I saw a nurse practitioner at work and they noted that my throat was showing signs of redness indicating some inflammation, but none of the signs that indicated strep throat (no cough, no fever, etc...) he also check my ears and determined they looked good. He though I was just suffering from allergies (post nasal drip and told me to take Zyrtec allergy medicine. I've taken it and no noticing any relief. my symptoms are non existent to mild when I wake up but, becomes more itchy as the day goes on. I constantly find myself spitting mucus, after doing the clearing my throat. I did have unprotected intercourse with an older woman a week and 2 days ago, I work work at a hospital lab and did run some test. my WBC was normal with 6.38. and my white cell counts were present in normal ratios. HIV IGG was negative (but really to early for the test ) and so was my sphyilis IgG. CRP was below reference range and rapid strep test was negative. Do you think the nurse practitioner was right or could I be suffering from something much worse?
Brief Answer:
Allergic diathesis seems likely cause
Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us
I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist). I have gone through your query and i have noted your concern.
I too think that you probably have an allergic tendency which is responsible for your upper respiratory symptoms.
As far as history of recent sexual encounter is concerned these symptoms dont match those of any STD. Neither i would suspect HIV as underlying cause of these symptoms as these are not specific for HIV.
Regards
