Suggest Treatment For Itchy Hands And Feet
Question: Hi, I have been suffering wih itchy hands and feet for the last 24 hours and I hav no sign of a rash, bumps, or any symptoms. I am concerned now because, the itching has not let up and I have not ate or done anything out of the ordinary. Currently, I am takin a daily mulit-vitamin with omega-3, and a vitamin D supplement, which I have been taking for years now. The only new supplement that I have been taking for two weeks now is alpha lipoic acid, but I have not had any side affects that I know of. Any suggestions?

Hi XXXX,
Welcome to health care magic,
Itchy hands could be due to eczema or allergic hives or atopic dermatitis but it must be inspected in order to have a clear diagnosis.
Without visual inspection,I wont be able to comment exactly on the problem,So it would be better if you can take the clinical picture of the itchy areas of hands and feet as in dermatology one needs to inspect with eyes what the lesions are, how they look and what the skin condition is there.
Kindly get back to me with the images.

As I stated in the initial question, I do not have any signs, lesions, sores, bumps, hives, or rashes and I'm sure that I agree with your suggestion. This started out of the blue and my hands and feet are itching uncontrollably.
Brief Answer:
Could be some unknown allergy.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the quick follow-up.
As we discussed, if you do not have any bumps, hives or rashes then the only possibility could be some unknown allergy which is causing your itching sensations uncontrollably.
Here,I do not think there is any possibility of itching due to multivitamins,omega-3 or even alpha lipoic acid as you were already taking them before this episode of severe itching.
Therefore,i would advise you to take symptomatic treatment like antihistamines (levocetrizine) in combination with mast cell stabilizers like montelukast (to prevent allergy) which is available over the counter at your nearby pharmacy (brand name: Montek-LC) to get the maximum relief.
Calamine lotion can also be used over the hands and feet for symptomatic relief.
I would expect that you will start getting better from this severe itching in couple of days.
In case, the symptoms persists even after symptomatic treatment, then I would advise to check your routine blood counts (especially differential counts) with ESR and consult nearby GP or dermatologist who will examine the affected area and can come to a certain conclusion.
Hope this information will be helpful.
