Suggest Treatment For Itchy Rash Om Scalp

Question: I am taking augmentin because of mastoiditis. Last week after a cough and sore throat I developed a pain in the bone behind my left ear and bumps in my scalp that hurt to the touch. My dr prescribed augmentin which I've been taking for 3 1/2 days. The bump is not swollen and no longer hurts but the rash in my scalp is still there and has spread a little to my forehead. It itches badly and hurts when I scratch it. I'm wondering now if it is shingles?? Perhaps it is related to the mastoiditis and will go away soon. I never had fever with all of this. I'm hoping it is simply a rash related to the mastoiditis or lymph infection and not shingles.

Brief Answer:
Rash is not due to Shingles...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query and an elaborate history. I have gone through the query thoroughly and understood your problem. I will try to help you with this.

1. The sore throat and the cough are not related to the swelling behind the left ear. I do feel the swelling is an enlarged lymph node secondary to rash developed in the scalp. Lymph nodes are like policeman in the body, which props up when there is active infection going on in the surrounding area. The inflammation over the swelling has subsided because of the antibiotic you took.

2. Rash could be because of the upper respiratory tract infection or due to the folliculitis, which requires a complete examination by a good dermatologist. I doubt shingles in this case. Shingles will cause terrible burning sensation with boils over the surface.

3. My suggestions to you are:
a. Continue with Augmentin.
b. Use an antihistamine for the itching over the scalp.
c. Drink plenty of warm water.
d. To consult a good dermatologist for a complete evaluation and management.

Hope I have answered your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.
