Suggest Treatment For Kidney Disease And Refractory Anemia

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: Is there anything I can do to improve kidney function?
I have some kidney damage and also refractory anemia. Both are being monitored. When my kidney function improves my red blood vessel levels improve and the opposite occures when my kidney function goes down. I know that erythroporetin is the hormone that produces red blood vessels and have received Procrit but not for 1 1/2 years. I have researched suppliments that claim to improve kidney function. Do they work? What about diet? Is there anything I can add to my diet that could help?

Thank you for the help

Brief Answer:
Few changed need to be made

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for getting back

It is a bit hard to suggest diet without the serum creat value. However the following are some general instructions

1. Avoid red meat. You can have chicken or fish twice a week. Please make sure it is not deep fried
2. You must follow a salt restricted diet. Make sure not to consume salt rich food like processed food, pizza, pasta, popcorn, chips, etc. Even at home the food must be cooked seperately for you so that the salt is less
3. You can eat plant protein. Like dal, sprouts, etc
4. Low protein supplements like Nepro LP can be taken twice a day for supplements

Modification of medications

1. I recommend to stop allopurinol and take febuxostat instead in order to control uric acid
2. I do not recommend levostatin as it is contraindicated in GFR less than 30. I suggest atorvastatin instead
3. I suggest Tab Telmesartan tobe started at a low dose to protect the kidney from further damage. Time and again it has been proved that these group of drugs protect the kidneys
4. I suggest Omega 3 fatty acids and N acetyl cysteine as supplemets to retard the progression of the kidney failure. However studies have shown varied response and it is not absolutely necessary

Please speak to your doctor about the recommendations made

I hope I was of help, I am sorry for the short delay in my reply as I was travelling last morning
